Caribbean Recycling Summit
With the support of US Environmental Protection Agency, the Puerto Rico Recycling Partnership (PRRP) is collaborating with the Virgin Islands Recycling Partnership (VIRP), the PR Solid Waste Authority, and the US Department of Agriculture to host the first Caribbean Recycling Summit. With this event, we hope to offer an opportunity to connect the public, private, and non-profit sectors of the Caribbean, with the goal of carrying out concrete actions that will lead to sustainable materials management in our islands. The event will provide an exhibiting opportunity for companies, organizations, and agencies, as well as a venue for themed workshops related to challenges, opportunities, and new advances in the recycling industry.

Green Thursday Seminar, RECYCLING SUMMIT
Thursday, February 19th, 5:30 PM, Gifft Hill School, Upper Campus Auditorium.
Join us to learn of exciting new recycling initiatives and waste management planning on St. John!  Repurpose, Reduce, and Recycle.  See what’s new!
GHS/EARTH Program, Coral Bay Community Council, Island Green Living Association (IGLA) and St. John Community Foundation will present the following at this participative session about St. John’s innovative recycling activities:
Gifft Hill School Earth Program
Dave Minner, EARTH Program Coordinator, will speak about the Bottle Wall Projects.  Gifft Hill School EARTH students in grades 4-12 have completed three bottle wall projects since the initial wall project funded by an Island Green Living Assoc. grant.  The bottle wall areas include a garden terrace, a water diversion wall to collect cistern water, and a Ugandan style Key Hole or Kitchen Garden.   The simple bottle wall concept and construction techniques will be described in pictures along with the paper-crete used in one of the walls.

William Willigerod, IGLA, will describe the progress being made at the Resource Depot, where people can buy recycled construction and household items.  He will also introduce the aluminum can compactor and baler for St. John, being provided in conjunction with St John Community Foundation.  Celia Kalousek will speak on the future of this project. 
Coral Bay Community Council
Sean Richardson and Sharon Coldren will provide an update on the USDA grant-funded Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan for Coral Bay.  A discussion period will follow to solicit comments and new ideas from the public.

ABCs of Composting Workshop!

This workshop will provide an introduction to and the importance of composting as a sustainable materials management practice. Two composting experts will describe in detail various types of composting, including vermicomposting with worm bins, as well as different types of compost bins. Organics management stewards will assist in providing a hands-on demonstration and training on how to build your own compost bin and will invite any interested individuals to get involved with community composting events this summer!
